How to Make a Silk Ribbon Embroidery Iris

by Kristen Leave a Comment

Silk Ribbon Embroidery Iris Flower

Here’s a look at how to make 3 different types of iris flowers using silk ribbon embroidery. I love silk ribbon embroidery because it adds such depth and texture to whatever you choose to create. Unlike cross-stitch and needlepoint where the stitches are very flat, using silk ribbon lets you play around with the designs more and take a “free-hand” approach to your project.

I love this tutorial by Crafty Attic because she does a beautiful job showing you how to create a cluster of Iris flowers. And best of all, I love this tip that I learned.

TIP: Do all of your embroidery using white silk ribbon and then use Pro Marker pens to color the ribbon. Not only does this allow you to just keep one color of ribbon on hand rather than dozens, it also lets you blend your colors and get a much more realistic looking flower.

Star Wars Saga Cross-Stitched Tapestry

by Kristen Leave a Comment

Star Wars Cross Stitch

When I came across this project at Makezine, I knew that I had to share it.  I don’t think that the picture does it justice, but it gives you an idea about how amazing this cross-stitched tapestry is.

Artist Aled Lewis created this 30-foot long, cross-stitched tapestry on a 7 stitch per inch fabric and it has scenes from the entire Star Wars saga.  While I don’t have the budget to add this beautiful piece to my home, perhaps I could use it as inspiration to make my own…but on a much smaller scale of course.

If you were lucky enough to get a new iPhone in your stocking this year, you may be looking for a way to personalize it.  If you’re a Dr. Who fan, or are simply a fan of a fun Tardis pattern, then this cross-stitch pattern is for you.

Halloween Cross Stitch Pattern

by Kristen Leave a Comment

It won’t be long before little trick or treaters will be ringing my doorbell. To help get in the spirit and give my house a festive Halloween decor, I think I’ll start working on this adorable Hoot Owl Cross Stitch Pattern.

Halloween Cross Stitch PatternI like this pattern because it has all of the typical fall colors, so I can keep it up for Halloween and Thanksgiving.  This design isn’t too difficult, yet it has enough detailing to make it fun and interesting.  I think I should be able to get it done pretty quickly and have it on display in a few weeks.  It’s a good project to take on the road too, since there are plenty of blocks of colors that I can do while waiting in the car for my kids at school.

Beautiful Embroidery Book

by Kristen Leave a Comment

I have always enjoyed doing embroidery work and my most recent project is a pretty needlepoint piece that has been tucked away for a while.  I plan on working on a silk embroidery project next.

In my search for embroidery projects, I came across this beautiful new eBook from Needle N Thread.  Let me stress that I am not an affiliate and I make no money by mentioning this book.  I simply love Mary’s work and wanted to show-off her new book.

Embroidery Book

I think the cover alone shows you just how beautiful her work is.  And what I like even more is that she has focused on small projects that don’t require a lot of materials.  Use up some of the stash you have lying around and start a project that won’t take too long to complete.  I’m all about instant gratification, so a small project is right up my alley 🙂
